Historic reference

The Regional Document Preservation Center was established by order № 384 of the TSU Rector dated June 17, 2002 on the basis of the former Unit of Hygiene and Restoration in the Department of Rare Books and Manuscripts (established in 1988).

The Center was set up as a result of implementing the project «Establishing Regional Document Preservation Center» within the framework of the Federal Target Program «Culture of Russia» (2001-2010).

The Center staff includes four art restorers and one technician certified by the State Commission of the Russian Federation. The employees studied at the leading Russian restoration centers and abroad: Russian State Library (Moscow), All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature (Moscow), the Grabar Art Conservation Center (Moscow), Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg), Berlin State Library (Berlin), Oxford Conservation Consortium (UK), and Austrian National Library (Vienna).

Activities

• Providing scientific and methodological, advisory and practical support on a wide range of issues related to conservation of written and printed heritage.
• Assisting libraries, museums, archives in establishing document conservation units.
• Conducting conferences, seminars, workshops for restorers, curators, staff of libraries, museums, archives.
• Carrying out an expert review of library stocks and their storage conditions.
• Restoration activity: restoration of books, leather book bindings, archival documents, maps, atlases, graphic works, posters, etc.
• Disinfection of documents with biological damage.
• Phased conservation of documents.
